The Angel Tree

My childhood Christmases were wonderful; Mom always had a great sense of celebration, and my father was a good provider.  So for me, Christmas was a magical time of year when Santa brought all of us children presents.  Not everyone has such privileged childhoods.  Even when their parents care about them, many children don’t get gifts at this time of year.  Of course the children of people we know do get gifts; and the Salvation Army, Deep Well, and Bluffton Self Help take care of the rest, right?  Not in the current recession.  Unemployment is at historical highs, and charitable contributions are down.   What can you and I do about it?  During Advent this year – like last year – we will have an “Angel Tree” in Gordon Mann Hall with cards on it.  On the cards will be an indication of (1) a family; (2) a child, with age and gender indicated; and (3) probably a specific request for a gift.  Don’t be surprised if a mother asks for a winter coat or shoes for a child who has no winter coat or no shoes that fit.  Please take a card, buy a gift, wrap it up and put it under the tree, labeled with the card.  It will be a joy to see the gifts pile up during the Advent season.  On the Fourth Sunday of Advent these gifts will be delivered to the families.   Jesus said: “…'I'm telling the solemn truth: Whatever you did for someone who was overlooked or ignored, that was me—you did it for me.” (Matthew 25:40)

             Sandy Grant, Deacon.

Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, if you love me, feed my lambs, tend my sheep.” (taken from John 21: 15-17)  Feed My Sheep is All Saints’ outreach project for our local food pantries Bluffton Self Help and The Deep Well Project.  For December they are asking for “Staple Items for the Pantry—canned, boxed, or packaged.”  Grocery stores run specials every week…pick up one or two items each time you go and bring them to church on Sunday.  Contributions can be placed in the wicker basket located in the narthex.  It’s that easy!

Family Promise Host Week at All Saints will be Christmas week - the seven days from December 20-27.  What better time for us to really be part of the Christmas story.  Our volunteers will assure that there is not only room for families, like Mary and Joseph, at the Inn, but loving hospitality and care for families. Three families are currently working in the program towards independence– four adults and 7 children ranging in age from 3 months to 13 years. We will again be working with members of Congregation Beth Yam to provide meals and overnight accommodations here at All Saints for these families.  Volunteer job descriptions will be listed in the Sunday Parish Life bulletin.  Sign up sheets will be on the parish hall bulletin board.  More hosts will be needed during the daytime than usual because county schools will be closed and the Day Center will be closed the 24th & 25th.  Perhaps a family could be "adopted" for a day – go out to lunch or dinner; take the family to the Sandbox or bowling or a movie.  Come to the church and bake cookies or help them decorate a tree in the community room upstairs.  All Saints will be home for these families as our parish celebrates Christmas - the rebirth of Love into our lives.   Please be part of this rewarding local outreach ministry.   Talk with Ginny Trolley, Loni Saunders or Fr. Lindsey about this worthwhile community project.
