Sundays in Summer Adult Christian Education Please join the clergy as they continue to facilitate a multi-part DVD lecture series on ‘The Book of Genesis’ taught by Professor Gary A. Rendsburg, Rutgers University. Complimenting his highly acclaimed approach to Jewish scripture and history, this weekly class will explore the often astonishingly sophisticated literary devices and techniques that belie the deceptively simple sentences and stories that are familiar to us.

• Why does Genesis have two creation stories?
• How do we reconcile apparent contradictions?
• Why are there repeated appearances of barren women and younger sons?
• What is the theological purpose of Genesis’ 21st century meaning?

In the first 11 chapters of Genesis, we see a universal story, a universal perspective, describing the relationship between God and humanity in general. People like Adam and Noah are not Israelites, in the strict sense; rather they represent all humanity.

August 2: Barren Woman and Youngest Son
August 9: Jacob and Esau
August 16: Jacob and Beautiful Rachael: more than meets the eye
August 23: Joseph and His Brothers
August 30: The Story of Judah and Tamar
September 6: The Story of Potiphar’s Wife

Please join them in the Library at 9 a.m. All are welcome!

School Day, School Days (you know the rest!)...All Saints Preschool begins its 2009-10 session on Wednesday August 19, which means the back parking areas will again be a hubbub of activity with children and parents coming and going, outside playtime activities, etc. So please remember to be very cautious when using the back driveway during the daytime hours…and if possible, please do not park back there during school days; use the front parking area—better to be safe than sorry!

Family Promise Host Week at All Saints will be the seven days from August 23 to August 30. There are two families currently working toward independence in the program. A woman and her 12 year old daughter have been in the program about a month. A second woman and her two boys – a 12 year old and a 5 year old started in Family Promise on July 14. They will all be starting school just as they come to us and need lots of our nurturing care as they adjust to being back into the school routine with new teachers. Both mothers are actively looking for work. Neither has a car at this time. We will again be working with members of Congregation Beth Yam to provide meals and overnight accommodation here at All Saints for these two families. Please see the job descriptions for volunteers in the enclosed flyer and sign up to be a part of this rewarding outreach ministry! Some of the "Saints" who have participated in past host weeks are up north staying cool this summer, so we need some new volunteers to join us. Please talk with Ginny Trolley, Loni Saunders or Mr. Lindsey about this worthwhile community project and join us.

Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, if you love me, feed my lambs, tend my sheep.” (taken from John 21: 15-17) Feed My Sheep is All Saints’ outreach project for our local food pantries Bluffton Self Help and The Deep Well Project. For August they are asking for “Canned Fruits.” Grocery stores run specials every week…pick up one or two items each time you go and bring them to church on Sunday. Contributions can be placed in the wicker basket located in the narthex. It’s that easy!
