Dominican Republic Mission

The Dominican Republic is a place of profound poverty and amazingly upbeat, loving and spirit-filled people, who, in spite of their circumstances, are an inspiration to all who encounter them. We came away as highly honored that we had a chance to be with them even for such a short time.”  - A short-term mission team member

All Saints is committed to supporting the people of Iglesia La Redención in the City of Barahona with our prayers, time, talent and funding, as well as participating in the building of an Episcopal school (escuela) and church (templo) over the next 3-5 years.  Barahona is a large Dominican port city about 3 hours west of Santo Domingo on the Caribbean coast.

All Saints has a long-standing relationship with the Diocese of the Dominican Republic.  Our youth group and adult sponsors have been involved for a number of years in conducting vacation bible schools and participating in construction projects. In every case they have received so much more from the experience than they gave in time and love.  The Parish's annual “Wild and Crazy” Auction has been a very successful means of providing financial support for trips to the DR and other places determined by the youth group leadership.

In February, 2007, a small group of All Saints parishioners made an exploratory trip to the DR to observe the mission, ministry and needs of the Diocese first hand.  They visited churches and schools from the capital of Santo Domingo to the Haitian border -- an area identified as a ‘special need’ by the Bishop of the DR, the Rt. Rev. Julio Cesar Holguin.  As resources are always limited compared to the overwhelming need, La Redención in the City of Barahona was chosen as the place to focus our efforts, to help the people now worshipping in an overcrowded storefront to build a church and school.  Another such trip is planned for February, 2008.

You can support our mission to the Dominican Republic in many ways:

  1. Pray for the people, the clergy and the work in the DR.

  2. Provide scholarships for Dominican children.

  3. Visit the Diocese and the church at La Redención on an annual parish-sponsored survey trip.

  4. Help to build the school and church as a member of a short-term mission construction team.

  5. Help to conduct Vacation Bible School as a member of a short-term mission team.

  6. Participate in short-term medical mission work for qualified medical professionals.

  7. Support the micro-loan project for the women of the Dominican Episcopal Church

  8. Support the vestry as they allocate financial resources to the construction project.

The Dominican Republic Mission Committee is co-chaired by Bonnie and John Gruetzmacher who will be excited to get you involved in mission to the Dominican Republic (843-987-5267)

Latino Ministry

We’ve looked and looked, but can’t find ...

… anywhere where Jesus asked to see anyone’s “official documents” before he taught, healed, fed, or loved them.

And isn’t that just what we expect when we meet him?  Just as we are.  No credentials, no reservations required.  Loving kindness, compassion, understanding, and help to the point we’re knocked off balance by it, sometimes sent reeling.  Complete love: it’s something beyond our capacity to receive fully, and something we’ll never be able to give completely to others.

But we try. We are the Body of Christ.  Jesus’ instruction to us couldn’t have been clearer:  "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.”  (John 13:33-35)  With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we are to be Jesus’ hands and feet in this world, and to complete his work here.

Many individual member of our parish are already ministering to Latino people by volunteering with:

Our parish as a whole made a substantial financial contribution to the Latin American Council (Fall 2007) and currently - two evenings a week - provides classroom space for GED classes for Latinos.

If you are interested in Latino Ministry, please contact our deacon, Sandy Grant.  You can reach her at home (715-0202), leave a message at church, or contact her via e-mail.

You may not have the time and energy for a major contribution to this ministry, but you can help in little ways every day.  Are the people who mow your lawn Latino?  When the temperature hits 95°, do you offer them a cup or water?  Or a bottle of Gatorade?  (Of course, if they are European, or Asian, or Afro-American, they have the same need!)
