Sunday Adult Christian Education The Lives of Great Christians, a video series featuring men and women of different times and circumstances who are notable for the practice of the Christian life, hopes to inspire us to think creatively about what it means to be Christians in the 21st century.
| May 2 | Bernard of Clairvaux |
| May 9 | Francis of Assisi |
| May 16 | Clare of Assisi |
| May 23 | Catherine of Sienna |
| May 30 | The Dead Sea Scrolls series begins |
In 1947, the discovery of ancient documents in the caves of Qumran near the Dead Sea shook the world of biblical studies. They contain not only our oldest copies of biblical texts, but additional materials which provide an unprecedented view of Jewish life before and during the time of Jesus. This DVD course, taught by Professor Gary A. Rendsburg of Rutgers University, attempts to bring the Dead Sea Scrolls to light in a meaningful way for a 21st century audience. All programs will be held in the parish hall at 9 am and all are welcome!

Do you have four free hours on Saturday morning, May 22? How about coming to Gordon Mann Hall for a delicious breakfast (scrambled eggs, sausage, grits with shrimp gravy, biscuits, juice and coffee or tea) prepared and served by local clergy and the members of the MLK Celebration Planning Committee. After breakfast you can sign up for a local community work project. Each project has a designated coordinator. You will drive to the site and work for three hours. You may be involved in helping an island resident who needs assistance, cleaning up a native island cemetery, fixing up or painting at The Children's Center, clearing litter along a roadside or some other worthwhile activity. During the process, you will meet fellow islanders from different churches and neighborhoods. You might be surprised to find the experience fun and you will meet new people who may become friends. Dress in work clothes and bring work gloves. Garden rakes, pruning shears, clippers and shovels may be useful for some projects. This is an opportunity for individuals old and young or it could be something a Supper Club, a Bible Study Group or any other church activity group might decide to undertake together. All Saints has long provided the site for breakfast and our clergy help with the breakfast, but the turnout by parishioners to volunteer has been underwhelming. Let's try to change that in May. Contact Jenifer Gajdalo for more information--681-3881.

Pentecost Sunday is May 23 One tradition associated with the Eucharist of the day is having a lesson read in other languages so as to remind us of the variety of languages spoken on Pentecost. If you can speak or read in languages other than English and would like to participate at either or both services, please sign up on the bulletin board in the Gordon Mann Hall.

Family Promise Host Week at All Saints is May 30 – June 5. One or more families in need of temporary housing and respite in order to get their life back on track, will be staying with us each evening and during the day on the 31st and the 5th of June. Volunteers are needed to do several short-time welcoming duties: Contribute a portion of an evening meal and act as host/hostess from 5:30 – 8 pm; stay overnight with the family(s) in case of emergency; act as host and transportation during the days when they will stay with us (Memorial Day parade or a movie, etc). Sign up sheets will be in Gordon Mann Hall or contact Loni Saunders to assist with evening host activities and Brenda Hand for the overnight hosts. Questions? Contact any of the above or Ginny Trolley. This is very up close and personal stewardship of our time and talent and these families are SO appreciative of our love and hospitality.

You are invited to participate in the 2010 Dominican Republic Mission experience. Join with our two All Saints teams going to La Redencion Church in Barahona June 26 - July 3 for Vacation Bible School and light construction work. Everyone in the parish is a key player and contributes to our mission - as a member of a working team, as a prayer partner, as a helper with packing VBS supplies or with a financial donation - all matters as we serve Christ through serving others. For up-to-date information on the Dominican Republic mission and contact information, go to the All Saints website: www.allsaints-hhi.org, the Mission section.
