Organist and Music Director Search
All Saints Church is seeking a Pastoral Musician to be its next Organist and Music Director. The ideal candidate will have experience in both traditional and alternative forms of music and able to provide music for several different worship styles. The candidate will also have an interest and experience in developing a music program for the entire parish.
The first major responsibility of the Music Director is to provide music for the Sunday traditional worship service, a Rite II Holy Eucharist service, at 10:15 a.m. This will include working with the clergy on liturgical planning, playing the organ for the service, and conducting the adult SATB choir. The music for this service is rooted in, but not limited to, the Anglican and Western Classical tradition. A correlating minor responsibility is to play one hymn at the end of the 8:00 a.m. service.
The ideal candidate will be an organist with outstanding service playing skills. The primary qualifications being sought in an organist are the ability to play hymns and service music in such a way as to inspire the congregation to boldly sing as well as to accompany the choir sensitively and securely. The organ is a three manual and pedal Walker digital organ with a Rodgers console.
This person must be an experienced and successful choral conductor able to work with a choir of volunteers who, although older, have above-average music reading skills. The choir desires someone who will be a vocal coach and teacher as well as conductor. It seeks someone who will challenge them to improve and excel as a choir, insuring that they are thoroughly prepared for the choral parts of the service each week. The Parish Choir has historically sung from September through May. There is a mid-week rehearsal and a 45 minute pre-service rehearsal on Sunday.
The second major responsibility is to develop and provide music for the “Saturday at Five” service, currently held two Saturdays each month at 5:00 p.m. in the parish hall. This will include helping the clergy clarify the vision for this service, working with the clergy on liturgical planning, playing the piano for this service, and recruiting singers and instrumentalists to help lead this service. This is not a “Renewal” or “Praise Band” service but rather is intended to be a jazz or folk service with music drawn from Wonder, Love and Praise, Lift Every Voice and Sing II, the Iona and Taize communities as well as other sources. Some experience in alternative worship would be helpful.
The third major responsibility will be to develop new ensembles appropriate to the parish such as children’s or youth choirs, handbell groups, etc. Currently volunteers work with young children. The church owns a three octave set of Malmark handbells.
The candidate should be someone who takes the Christian faith seriously, radiating it in all that is done in the service of the parish. This person will be expected to take an interest and participate in the larger life of the parish, getting to know the choir members and other parishioners, joining them on the journey of faith.
This position is envisioned as full time in which the Music Director will keep regular office hours, attend staff meetings and participate in parish life, offering musical services and direction where appropriate. The Music Director will also provide music for holy day and other special services as assigned. The ideal candidate is one who can truly be a collaborator with the clergy, staff, vestry and choir in working together to lead this congregation.
Hilton Head Island is a resort community with a large retirement population. It has a remarkably active cultural life for a community of its size, and it is located between Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA.
All Saints Church is part of the Episcopal Church of South Carolina, having remained in the ECUSA when many parishes in the Diocese of South Carolina departed. It is a welcoming, inclusive and energetic parish, living up to its motto, “If you have a faith or are seeking one, you’re always welcome in this house of the Lord.” Its theology and ministry are firmly in line with the national church. All Saints Church has a strong history of mission and concern for social justice issues. The congregation (including the choir) consists primarily though not exclusively of older and retired people including many who come from the northern part of the United States for the winter months.
